Visa

A Visit Visa issued to a foreign national who visits Sri Lanka as a bona-fide tourist is classified as a Tourist Visa. A tourist is a foreign national who wants to enter Sri Lanka for sightseeing, excursions, relaxation, visit relatives or yoga training for short periods not exceeding 6 months, with a maximum of two such visits in any one year.


With effect from year 2012, all Holiday or Business travelers to Sri Lanka must have Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for entering in to Sri Lanka. Please visit http://www.eta.gov.lk for more information.

All foreigners are to obtain Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before entering the country and will be issued with Tourist Visit Visa endorsements valid for a period of 30 days on arrival at port of entry (for touristic visits only), providing the tourist holds a return or onward air ticket or sufficient funds for air ticket and sufficient funds [currency / travellers cheques / credit card] equivalent to a minimum of US$30 per day for board and lodging for the duration of stay.

Important Note of Visa:

  1. No foreigner should enter into Sri Lanka until he/she obtains ETA.
  2. A Tourist Visit Visa is issued to a foreign national who visits Sri Lanka as a bona-fide tourist, is normally validated only for a single journey.
  3. This Visa will cease to be valid immediately upon departure from Sri Lanka, irrespective of whether the full period of stay authorized on the visa has been utilized or not.
  4. Tourists can request to extend their stay by applying to the Department of Immigration & Emigration at "Suhurupaya" , Sri Subuthipura Road, Battaramulla, Sri Lanka (tel: 94-11-532 9000 Hunting Line ; www.immigration.gov.lk). This is issued at the discretion of the authorities who must be satisfied that the applicant has sufficient funds and holds an onward or return ticket r travel.
